Theatre

While interpretations of classical plays are presented by the National Theater (Bayerische Staatsoper), the Residenztheater in Munich presents mostly modern and contemporary plays. But also smaller stages are worth a visit as their performances are of high quality. Quite often you will be able to see actors known from TV and cinema live in Munich’s theaters, and also vice versa – the career of many actors has started in Munich.

The venue of Bayerische Staatsoper and the Bavaria ballet, the National Theater, is one of the most famous opera houses s in the world. The Munich opera house was built in 1657 and since 1975 the opera festival takes place here, too. The list of the world famous directors and musicians who have worked here is impressive. Even in the 19th century creation by Richard Wagner premiered in the National Theater.

Prinzregententheater

Prinzregententheater

In the borough Bogenhausen the Prinzregententheater is situated at Prinzregentenplatz. The impressive building was constructed in 1901 and is similar to the festival hall of the Richard-Wagner-Opera in Bayreuth. In deed the planning of this theater was to have a Richard-Wagner-Opera house in Munich, too. Therefore at the opening of Prinzregententheater the “Meistersinger von Nürnberg” (Mastersingers) was performed.

Today Prinzregententheater is the home of the Bavarian Theater Akademie “August Everding”. Furthermore concerts and readings take place here, too.

State Theatre on Gärtnerplatz

State Theatre on Gärtnerplatz (Gärtnerplatztheater)

Directly at Gärtnerplatz in the borough Isarvorstadt in Munich you will find the Gärtnerplatz Theater. Built in 1864 its purpose was to be a people’s theater. Today it is one of the three theaters that belong to the Free State of Bavaria. Gärtnerplatz Theater performs well known pieces as well as modern plays, cabarets and concerts. Until 2016 the Theater will be renovated. Therefore performances will take place in other venues that will be pointed out on the website of the Gärtnerplatz Theater.

Residenztheater

Residenztheater

Right next to the National Theater at Max-Josef-Platz in the city centre of Munich there is the Residenztheater that was rebuilt in 1951 after the destruction of the Second World War. The luxury and expensive equipment of the new building and was a controversial issue amongst Munich locals. Today Residenztheater is the main venue of the Bayerische Staatsschauspiel (the Bavarian ensemble).

Cuvilliés-Theater

Cuvilliés-Theater

Also known under the name „Residenz Theater“ the Cuvilliés Theather in situated in the Munich Residenz. The theater was built by the Elector Joseph Maximilian III from 1751 to 1753. The manager of the construction was François de Cuvilliés. Today the theater that is bearing his name is one of the most important rococo theatres in Germany and worth a visit. Classical but also contemporary plays will be performed.

Marstall

Marstall

Another part of the Residenztheater is the Marstall, built by Leo von Klenze. During the 19th century the building was part of the royal riding school. Due to bombing during the Second World War the building was heavily damaged. For many years it was used by the National Theater as a store.

Only in 1971 the Marstall became a studio space and experimental stage and in 1972 it was reopened within the scope of the Olympic Games in Munich.

Today the theater is a centre of contemporary performing arts in Europe.

Munich Kammerspiele

Munich Kammerspiele (Münchner Kammerspiele)

In 1911 Münchner Kammerspiele opened and since 1926 they perform at Maximiliansstraße 25 and 26. The building of the Münchner Kammerspiele is the only sustained art nouveau theater in Germany. Besides theaters in Berlin, Münchner Kammerspiele has one of the most important German speaking ensembles. The performances of Münchner Kammerspiele are outstanding, provoking and polarize. Since the year 2000 the theatre has received many awards. Many actors became famous because of their acts at Münchner Kammerspiele.
